The Foundation is funded by Leeds Building Society and its members. The Foundation primarily provides funding towards practical items that directly support those in need including those with disabilities, affected by homelessness, or with serious health issues. They focus on people who either live or work in the areas served by the Society's branches which are located throughout the UK. In Scotland they have branches in Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Glasgow.

Every 3 months each shop selects 3 community groups or charities to help. Customers are directly involved in deciding how much each nominated group receives, by using a token to vote for the organisation they'd like to support. As well as cash, support can also be in the form of John Lewis products and/or volunteering time from Partners.

The Trust aims to aid the prevention or relief of poverty, by providing accommodation. Furthermore, it aims to 'relieve those in need by reason of age, ill health and disability by making available financial assistance for medical treatment, for suitable alternative accommodation or for providing assistance so that the individual in need may remain in his/her/their current accommodation, which might otherwise have been unsuitable'. The Trust will consider applications from men and married couples, as well as individual ladies. The Trust is also able to offer support and donations to other charitable organisations.

The Health Improvement Fund is available for new initiatives that will improve health and wellbeing in communities across Aberdeen, either geographical communities or communities of interest. Assistance is given in the provision of support for the poor and homeless, particularly in the winter months in Aberdeen. Young people have benefited from assistance to undertake voluntary work in an underprivileged area of the world. In addition to this support has been given for the resettlement of refugees in the Aberdeen area. Christian outreach and donations to church organisations are made. Access to performing arts and media has been provided.

The North East Scotland Transport Partnership (Nestrans) operates a Sustainable Travel Grant Scheme (STGS) to support and encourage Travel Planning and increasing sustainable travel throughout the North East of Scotland. The scheme provides financial assistance to organisations investing in measures aimed at encouraging sustainable travel, such as increasing travel to work by public transport, cycling and walking, low emission vehicles and reducing the need to travel.
