Wester Hailes Community Trust
-
The Wester Hailes Community Trust is a collaborative community body supporting local-led decision making and development in the South West Edinburgh neighbourhood Wester Hailes. The Trust is led by and accountable to its local membership which consists of 54 members and 12 trustees that hold board meetings on a monthly basis. Members share their ideas for Wester Hailes and vote on what ideas get put into action. Currently, we're collectively working to implement the 36 projects for community improvement proposed by the Wester Hailes Local Place Plan, Scotland's Inaugural Local Place Plan. Local Place Plans are a new kind of community led planning document implemented by the Scottish Government in 2019. Putting communities at the core of development, LPPs provide locals with the opportunity to propose the improvements and developments that they wish to see in their neighbourhoods. The 36 projects proposed by the WHLPP address and reflect the community feedback gathered through extensive and inclusive community engagement at events, workshops, and sessions in and around Wester Hailes. The projects work towards achieving a 20 minute neighbourhood and range from physical interventions such as improved paths and a community hub, to long term social strategies such as youth engagement, ageing in place, and so on. The development and delivery of the LPP has acted as an incentive for the community to come together and work towards common goals collectively. This has provided valuable skill building, has demystified the planning process for local residents, and has increased the membership of the Trust in the process.
