Museums Galleries Scotland: Funding Programmes 2022/23

Posted on 28 April 2022 by Christie McAlpine in Heritage Funding Museums Grants

Museums Galleries Scotland will open for applications to their Small Grants Fund and Museum Development Fund on Monday 2 May 2022.

Small Grants Fund - Up to £15,000

This fund provides support for small scale project activity but it also supports any eligible museums struggling to meet critical, non-project costs due to the depletion of reserves or budgets because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

What can they fund

The fund will support activity that will have impact in any of the following areas:

  • Activity that will build operational resilience.
  • Activity to re-engage with communities and audiences
  • Critical repairs and maintenance that you cannot afford to carry out.
  • Activity to improve environmental sustainability.

The Small Grants Fund cannot support core-operating costs.

When to apply

The first round of the Small Grants Fund will open for applications on Monday 2 May and will close at 5pm on Friday 1 July.

Museum Development Fund - Up to £50,000 (or £60,000 for Recognised Collections)

This fund is designed to support Accredited museums to make strategic steps towards becoming more resilient organisations in line with the aims of the National Strategy.

It will fund projects that help museums to strategically develop core or new work in line with our grant outcomes. We will prioritise applications for projects about;

  • Developing digital capacity
  • Re-engaging with communities
  • Workforce capacity and resilience
  • Building resilience
  • Responding to the climate emergency
What can they fund

This fund can support a wide range of project activity. Whatever your planned activity, it's important that it will have a demonstrable impact on the resilience of your museum(s).

All projects must deliver against an outcome for sustainability. Applications will be assessed on how well a project has been developed to deliver true impact, not on the number of outcomes you deliver against. We are looking for projects designed for maximum impact, but most importantly we are looking for tangible impact. If you try to link your application to too many outcomes for which you will never be able to show any measurable impact this will weaken your application rather than strengthen it.

When to apply

There will be two rounds of this fund. Round 1 will open for applications on Monday 2 May and will close on 13 June at 5pm.
